Trinidad- Teaching, Preaching, and Beaching

Dr. Brassfield and I just returned from a wonderful trip to Trinidad.  I find it important to share our experiences because all of our students and supporters play a vital role in our work on the island.  We offered training seminars to approximately 30 students, who otherwise would have no access to Biblical education or practical ministry training.   We traveled with Evangelist Rick McNeely and a team from his ministry, Christ to the World.  He has been working in Trinidad for several years and shares DLI's vision for training leaders.  Today's blog will offer a brief overview of our trip.  Tomorrow, we will discuss the importance of our work in Trinidad and how you can assist in the training of 5-fold ministry leaders there.

Thursday, 7/21- The day started at 5:30 AM as Dr. Brassfield and I journeyed to Little Rock for our flight.  We joined up with most of our team and flew to Houston, where we found a few more team members.  We finally arrived in Port of Spain, Trinidad at 8:00 PM.  Unfortunately, we still had a substantial drive to the house in Mayaro where were staying for the week.  The distance from the airport to the house is only about 50 miles, but the road conditions result in a 2 hour drive.  After a long day of travel, we quickly went to bed and prepared for the rest of the week.

Friday, 7/22- I woke up early Friday morning, anxious for a long run on the beach.  I was not disappointed; Trinidad offers miles and miles of undeveloped beach-front.  The run shook off the travel fatigue and cleared my mind for the work that was ahead.  Around mid-morning, we ventured to the local markets to stock up on groceries for the week.  That evening, we held our first DLI session on the island.  We had several students anxious to get started.  They turned in all of their homework assignments and were seated for the seminars.  I taught "6 Key Principles of Scripture Interpretation."  Our students were equipped with basic Bible Study techniques that will improve their devotional life and make them more responsible preachers and teachers, rightly dividing the word of truth.  Dr. Brassfield taught next on the "Kingdom of God."  The Kingdom was an integral part of Jesus' message, and our students were given fresh insight into this aspect of Jesus' teaching.

Saturday, 7/23-  Saturday was a busy, busy day.  We started at 6:00 AM with a long drive across the island to Port of Spain.  Our team hosted a Family Conference.  I represented DLI to the young adults of the church and engaged them in a discussion about discerning the will of God.  Immediately preceding the service, Dr. Brassfield and I conducted a DLI seminar with our students from Port of Spain. We covered the same topics from our session in Mayaro the night before.  Following the DLI seminar, we were rushed back to the other side of the island for another Family Conference.

Sunday, 7/24- On Sunday morning, we blitzed the island with preaching. Our team ministered in six local churches.  I had the honor of preaching at a dynamic church in a small village.  I hope my sermon blessed them as much as I was blessed by being in service with them. Sunday evening consisted of an intense session of grading homework and completing other administrative responsibilities.

Monday, 7/25- Monday was a much needed day of rest.  We were able to enjoy the primitive beaches, reflect on our time of ministry on the island, and plan for the future.  We know that our work in Trinidad is only beginning.
